Auvers-sur-Oise and Van Gogh
A ten-minute drive away, Auvers-sur-Oise is the village where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last two months of his life and painted over seventy canvases, including the famous Church at Auvers. His room at the Auberge Ravoux, the church, the wheat field and the painter’s grave form a moving walk to share. The King’s Kitchen Garden of Auvers and its themed paths extend the visit in the gentle Vexin light.
In the heart of the French Vexin
The French Vexin Regional Nature Park spreads just north of Pontoise with a landscape of small stone villages, chalk-white tracks and Romanesque churches. Villages like Vétheuil, Wy-dit-Joli-Village and Nucourt can be visited without a plan, by bike or by car. Pushing open the door of a farmhouse-inn for Sunday lunch extends the date very simply: you share a tart, a coffee, a conversation.
La Roche-Guyon, L’Isle-Adam, Ambleville
Listed among the most beautiful villages of France, La Roche-Guyon lines up a troglodyte castle and medieval keep beside the Seine. Closer to Pontoise, L’Isle-Adam offers a river beach, a forest and a flower-filled bridge. The Renaissance château of Ambleville opens its Italian gardens. On Lyad, Val-d’Oise and Vexin singles share their favourite routes; it is up to you to find someone to open the next gate with.
